Beyond her career, Lisa has a diverse range of passions and interests, most importantly the love and pride she has for her son John, who recently relocated to Florida and is currently working in construction helping in hurricane torn areas. The apple truly did not fall far from the Katz family tree!
A Corvette enthusiast, Lisa enjoys hitting the road, seeking adventure, and experiencing the thrill of the open highway. And, of course, she shares her home with a cat who thinks he’s a dog, adding a touch of humor and personality to her daily life. With a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Mercy College, Lisa’s journey may have taken an unexpected path into the construction and heavy equipment industry, but her impact has been undeniable. Her dedication, mentorship, and unwavering commitment have left an indelible mark on H.O. Penn Machinery, making her an inspiration to colleagues, employees, and customers alike
“I am fortunate to work in a company where women are encouraged and empowered.” – Lisa Katz, General Parts Manager
What and / or who inspired you to go into the construction industry?
Going into the construction industry happened by chance for me. My education and my interest at the time was in criminal justice. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue my education with law school. I had taken the NYC police officer exam and was waiting on getting called. I stumbled on a very basic job in H.O. Penn as a clerk typist while I was waiting to hear when I would start the academy and things took off from there. I had little or no knowledge of equipment coming from a big city other than a few of my friends fathers owned big Construction companies. I took a chance and started out doing quotes for customers and my interest peaked.
Why is work in the construction industry a great career choice for women?
The construction industry is a great career choice for women because we have the unique opportunity to go into a field where we are not seen as equals yet we can excel if we put our minds to it.
What do you enjoy most about working within this industry or your job?
The industry has afforded me the opportunity to meet all different types of people and grow in an industry where I was challenged. I am fortunate to work in a company where women are encouraged and empowered.
What advice would you give for women considering entering this field?
I would encourage women to work in this industry. It is an ever-growing ever-changing industry that is essential for growth in our cities and our communities.

What/Who inspired you to go into the construction industry?
The construction industry actually found me. I was a dance instructor prior to joining H.O. Penn and went from knowing all about tap, jazz and ballet to learning all about excavators, tractors and articulated dump trucks. I was definitely outside my comfort zone, but accepted the challenge to learn as much as possible and embraced the job and the industry with excitement and curiosity. My passion for this field and the people I have worked with have kept me here all these years.
Why is work in the construction industry a great career choice for women?
Since women are the minority in this industry, I believe it helps build us to be strong in the positions held. If you are confident and knowledgeable, you will succeed going up against any obstacle, no matter what that may be.
What do you enjoy most about working within this industry and H.O. Penn?
The construction industry is interesting to work in always meeting new contractors, learning about the different equipment, what their winning bids entail as far as scope, and what equipment they will need to purchase or finance to be a successful company in the industry. It is empowering when we help our customers get financing, whether they are just starting out or have made many purchases.
It is very rewarding to see our customers become successful, then to come back to H.O.Penn for their next piece of CAT equipment year after year, as their business grows and thrives. I am very proud to work for H.O.Penn in every aspect, however, I am especially proud knowing how much they care about their customers and want them to succeed. Knowing we had a hand in their success and they continue to come back to us for equipment and support is what we strive for.
What advice would you give for women considering entering this field?
From a personal perspective, the advice I would give would be the same advice I give to my children, entering into any field, not just the construction industry. Love what you do, whatever position you hold, be dedicated, work hard and give 100% to your employer and your team, and always be true to your values and if you do this, you will not fail.
From a professional perspective, construction can be a male-dominated field, but don’t let that intimidate you. Always stay confident in your abilities and don’t be afraid to prove yourself.
What and / or who inspired you to go into the construction industry?
Fifteen years ago I was fresh out of college and had the opportunity to work in power generation with my Dad who built his career managing service departments. I worked through the October 2011 snow storm & 2012 Storm Sandy, quickly learning how delicate our power infrastructure was and how essential generators were to our lives. Helping people in need of power felt fulfilling and with my dad’s encouragement, I decided to make a career in power generation.
Why is work in the construction industry a great career choice for women?
I think women can build a strong career in construction because companies are looking for more diversity in their workplaces and women bring a different perspective to the job. If more women joined the industry, inclusivity would increase, changing the notion that only men can do these jobs. I have two daughters and my goal is to set the example for them that if a boy can do it, they can do it too! The opportunities for career advancement are endless.
What do you enjoy most about working within this industry and HO Penn?
I thrive in the fast paced environment! Every single day is different especially working in rental power. It can be challenging to be the only woman walking onto a job site filled with men and there is always the added element of having to prove that I belong there, but I love that challenge. I am entering my 10th year with H.O. Penn and I have thoroughly enjoyed making this company my home. H.O. Penn has given me the opportunity to explore different positions, helping me gain a well rounded knowledge of the industry and I am thankful for their commitment to developing my career.
What advice would you give for women considering entering this field?
I would tell any woman looking to get into the industry to just do it & do it with tenacity! Get your boots dirty, walk the jobsites, put your hands on the iron and never let anyone make you feel like you don’t belong there!
I have 15 years of industry experience. I have a B.A. in Communications from UMass Amherst and entered the Power industry in 2010 as an Industrial Inside Sales Rep. I then worked in Account Management, Inside Sales and then transitioned into outside sales as a PSSR and now as a Rental Sales Engineer.
“Helping people in need of power felt fulfilling and with my dad’s encouragement, I decided to make a career in power generation.” – Elena Oberstadt, Rental Sales Engineer (Power Division)
