About Cat Skid Steers and Compact Track Loaders

Though compact track loaders and skid steers have many similar functions, these machines also exhibit many differences. When you choose the equipment that's right for your individualized application needs, you can take on any project with maximum performance and efficiency.

Skid Steers vs. Track Loaders

The most obvious difference between compact track loaders and skid steers is that track loaders feature a tracked chassis, while skid steers have tires.

Skid steers are generally lighter than track loaders, making them faster, easier and less expensive to transport. Their wheels also enable them to exert more pressure onto the ground, letting them achieve faster speeds than compact track loaders on hard surfaces.

Because compact track loaders have tracks instead of wheels, they have excellent weight distribution, making them more stable when navigating harsh terrains, such as mud, snow and loose soil. Their tracks also cause minimal ground disruption, resulting in less site cleanup. Track loaders are also known to exhibit better operator comfort due to their smooth operation.
